“And the secret garden bloomed and bloomed and every morning revealed new miracles.”
Frances Hodgson Burnett, The Secret Garden
Graceburn Gardens is a mixture of old and new. On our arrival three years ago the century old pinoak was swamped in rampant ivy, the house was obscured by a forest of conifers and wandering trad, blackberries and holly ran amok. Weedy trees spotted the lawns and the garden was singularly lacking in diversity.
Significant plantings include the century old cypress hedge, two stands of Japanese cedar, a variety of date palms, liquidamber, maples and a forest of rhododendrons. We have added a forest pansy, espaliered fruit trees, crepe myrtle, lots of salvias, hollyhocks, lilies, succulents and herbs and vegetables.
It is a delight to share the garden and we love it when guests play giant chess or boule, find a picnic spot, watch the sunset from the porch or simply relax in the garden with a glass or two of wine.
